Dr. Jessica Wade

#1 Champion of Women in S.T.E.M.

Dr. Jessica Wade came from a family of brilliant scientific brains, so it’s no wonder she dove head first into science, too. The further she got into her studies, though, the more she realized how alone she was – there were hardly any other women with her in Grad school! In fact, statistically the UK’s numbers of women in S.T.E.M. are some of the lowest in the world.

Jess, however, was not deterred. She finished her studies and her career has blossomed – but even more impressive is the fact that she has also become one of the world’s #1 champion of women in S.T.E.M.. She talks with students, families and teachers, she nominates women for awards and prizes left and write, she gives away dozens of copies of the book that inspired her to activate these activist superpowers,  but you’ll never guess what her most powerful, and prolific, tool has been in her advocacy – WIKIPEDIA!

“I kind of realised we can only really change things from the inside…Wikipedia is a really great way to engage people in this mission because the more you read about these sensational women, the more you get so motivated and inspired by their personal stories.”

“Whether you want to check a fact or learn something new, Wikipedia will likely be the first place you turn. On English language Wikipedia, only 17.8 per cent of all biographies are about women, and women scientists are particularly badly represented.”
