Fatima Al-Fihriya

Founder of world’s first University

This week on Broads You Should Know, Sara schools Sam & Justin about Fatima Al-Fihri (or Al-Fihriya, depending on your source), the woman who founded the world’s first-ever University in Fes, Morocco. Not only did she build it, but she was there every step during construction, overseeing the project to make sure that everything was exactly to her specifications. The University, al-Qarawiyyin, is still standing today and features some of the oldest surviving texts in its library, including the original documents of the prophet Muhammad.
